The Power of Social Media March 17, 2010

Yesterday I helped out at a rally to bring Google Fiber to my local town and it really showed how far social media can take you. The Facebook Group for the event was set up about a month before the event and with all of the different organizers involved promoting they had over 3,000 members by the time of the event. And probably a few hundred showed up for the rally where they enjoyed wine, beer and snacks all donated or provided at a discount by local businesses.
The rally was held at the Art Center where I volunteer as a partial fundraiser for the Center. I also posted the rally as an event on the Art Center’s Facebook Page and it was seen by our fans. It was great to join these two seemingly different groups – the techies and the art lovers – and it was a great way to introduce new people to the Art Center and give art lovers a new respect for the people who take care of the technical aspect of life.
While there was traditional press involved in the event, most of the press took place via social media and creative texting. And the social media was definitely part of the succes of the rally.
